Dog saves baby & cares for it

This video is very interesting. This dog found a baby in a nearby dumpster. The dog then carried the baby back with the rest of its pups and cared for it until someone found it. The baby had been abandoned. I hope you enjoy the video http://peoplenpets.com

ChipIn Donation Widget for Shelters

When Mandi started the People N Pets website a couple of months ago, she not only wanted to connect pet owners with other pet owners, but to try and help all animals enjoy long, healthy lives in a loving and caring environment, especially those who were less-than-fortunate. She wanted (and still wants) to create an online place where animal shelters and pet owners can connect, and create bonds to help every pet find a loving home.

Mandi has recently asked that I take over some of the duties that she was managing with People N Pets, and keep it going in the direction she had envisioned. She’ll still be a part of the network, but I will be handling the main moderating functions of the People N Pets social network, as well as this blog and the Twitter account.

Now that that’s out of the way, back to the business at hand:

One of the big things Mandi wanted to do with People N Pets from the very beginning is to collect donations and hold weekly/monthly/etc drawings and give the donations to the winning animal shelter. I thought this was a great idea, so one of the first things I’m doing is to add a ChipIn donation collection widget to People N Pets. The goal of the ChipIn widget is two-fold, not only can we donate funds to help the shelters in these tough times, but it can also help us get more shelters to join if they know have a chance of winning the drawing, increasing memberships and connections.

The financial crisis is hitting many parts of the country very hard. This can lead to neglected pets, increased animal abandonment rates, which means more animals on the streets and flooding the already fledgling shelters. The influx of animals becomes more of a burden, and could lead to more animals being euthanized. That’s the worst-case scenario, but I’ve volunteered at a couple of shelters, and seen the less than desirable conditions that some of these animals have to live in, so every little bit can help. Check out this news story about some of the conditions at an animal shelter right here in my own city.

I’ll be adding the widget to the sidebar of People N Pets in the next day or so, and I’ve already collected some cash from friends and family that I’ll put in it to start it off. Anyone with a Pay Pal can donate anonymously, so even non-members and visitors to the site can donate funds.

Family Moving – 2 Labs in Need of a Home

Apparently I was duped. This is email below was in fact a real email, but not from a person in Baton Rouge. Thanks to a very keen-eyed Twitter follower, I was assured that Cookie and Coco are in fact OK. You can read about it here.

I just received an email from my sister about 2 labs in Baton Rouge, LA needing a place to live.

“As many of you know, we are moving in just 2 weeks. Unfortunately, I have still not been able to find a good home for Cookie and Coco . We’re not able to take our beloved doggies with us and I’ve been desperately trying to find a home for both of them ‘together’. They were raised together and pine without each other. The Lab rescue have already said that they would probably separate them, so this is my last resort.

Recently I tried to take Coco out in my car alone and she TOTALLY refused to even get into the car without Cookie…..!!!! She absolutely pulled back on her haunches until Cookie was by her side. Both doggies are in great health, have been spayed and have ID chips implanted under the skin.

Cookie turned 3 December 10th and Coco will be 3 April 1st. Cookie is my mellow-yellow, and just loves her tummy rubbed. Coco is adorably funny and lives for her “ball.” She also loves the water….. Cookie loves lots of attention. Both doggies are loyal and love to walk. They have been raised with my 3 kids running around all over the place, and have survived Sammy’s constant hugging and love of ‘dress-up’, so they are fantastic family dogs. This is by far one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make, but under the circumstances I have no choice.

Please, please forward these pics to all you find a great home for these fabulous doggies. They are just adorable and it’s heartbreaking to let them go. In a perfect world, I hope that we could find someone local so that we can still keep in touch and visit them. I pray that someone, somewhere can help us keep Cookie and Coco together, and love them just as much as we do.

Dog Obedience

Being a dog owner can be a source of joy and great companionship. However, your dog needs to be well trained and socialized to cultivate good habits in it.

Therefore, it is vital to obedience instruct your dog. If you are seriously considering obedience training for your dog, it must follow some techniques like house breaking, coming when called, and walking on a leash without pulling.

Obedience training can prevented many problems and can help solve the bad behaviors that exist. Many people think that obedience training is something that is done to a dog to make it perform some artificial activity on command.

Obedience training is to train dogs to be well-trained, to obey anything and everything they are told to do. It covers a wide range of lessons a dog can learn, including tricks, family manners, show ring exercises, service dogs for handicapped owners, and search and rescue dogs.

Dogs all carry their obedience training to the highest level. They have been trained to act upon a strange set of commands that boost their value as helpers to human.

There are basic guidelines that should be followed when training a dog to have manners and discipline. Remember that timing is everything. Coordination of the coach movements and corrections is directly related to the ability of the puppy to comprehend the lesson he is being taught.

Directly related to timing is praise. If when given the command “come” a puppy responds with the correct action and is not praised, he quickly loses enthusiasm and interest. On the other hand, when given plenty of praise and caresses immediately upon correct completion of a given command, he quickly learns that the exercises are fun and beneficial.

Schooling a puppy requires patience and confidence. Puppies know when the trainer is sure of their self and what he is doing. Patience is absolutely not as easily learned, but if not used time after time, impatience will cause fright and lack of assurance in the puppy.

Be Aware of Rabies

Rabies is a viral disease that affects many types of animal, and is known to be particularly prevalent in wild animals. It is a highly contagious disease and can spread very quickly, with domestic pets contracting Rabies from coming into contact with infected wild animals a common occurrence. Domestic pets that have been bitten by wild animals, or by an unknown assailant, will need to be checked for the virus as it spreads through bites or cuts, and likewise people that have been bitten should also undergo medical checks for the disease. Lately there have been many reports of an increase in stray animals as owners find they cannot afford to feed them and simply turn them free; many of these animals are subsequently handed in to shelters, and stray cats and dogs can be prime candidates as carriers of rabies. As we have already said it is possible for all animals – both domestic and wild – to contract rabies, and the condition can also be passed to humans through animal bites. It is widely considered that wild animals are the most prone to the disease, as these are not subject to the checks and the general care that domestic pets are routinely given: Foxes and raccoons, and skunks and hogs are all common carriers of rabies, and in the wild should be avoided by both owners and pets to be sure to limit the chances of infection. It is essential to stress again that any suspected case of rabies or any person or animal that has been bitten b y another, should seek medical help immediately, as rabies is a dangerous and sometimes fatal disease. As we have already seen, rabies is a very dangerous illness that requires instant medical intention, and as such it is vital that all domestic pets undergo the correct routine of anti-rabies shots in order to help prevent infection. Vaccination is carried out as a routine precaution on thousands of animals every day, and should be the first consideration for the owner of a new pet; dogs and cats are particularly susceptible, and universally popular, and need to be attended to as soon as they are of suitable age. Those pets that will be roaming outdoors with the likelihood of meeting other wild or domestic animals, cats in particular are the most vulnerable. Animal shelters receive incoming stray pets every day, and these will be checked for and vaccinated against rabies, giving the potential owner the peace of mind that their new pet is healthy and protected.
